Publishing Tips for New Writers
from Linda Armstrong, Listee of
Poets and Writers and author of dozens of poems in U.S. journals.
Your poem is a bridge between you and the world. Share it! Here are some ideas on how to begin.
*Learn about how poems are being written today. Attend readings. Subscribe to small press journals. Read anthologies of contemporary poetry.
* Keep track of opportunities for poets. Read Poets and Writers. Check Poets Market and the Dustbook directories of small presses.
* Be professional in your submissions. Include only 3-5 poems in each packet. Do not send the same poems to different presses at the same time. Double-check submissions guidelines and follow them. At least look at the publication before you send. Be patient. It could be months before you hear. Write more poems in the meantime and send them to other places.
